I察SHEKURE
The last guests of our woeful wedding veiled and covered themselves察put on
their shoes察dragged off their children察who were tossing a last piece of candy
into their mouths察 and left us to a perating silence。 We were all in the
courtyard察 nothing could be heard but the faint noise of a sparrow gingerly
drinking water from the half´filled well bucket。 This sparrow察whose tiny head
feathers gleamed in the light of the stone hearth察abruptly vanished into the
blackness察 and I felt the insistent presence of the corpse in my father¨s bed
within our emptied house察now swallowed by night。
^Children察院I said in the cadence Orhan and Shevket recognized as the one I
used to announce something察 e here察the both of you。 ̄
They did so。
^Black is now your father。 Let¨s see you kiss his hand。 ̄
They did so察quietly and docilely。 ^Since they¨ve grown up without a father察
my unfortunate children know nothing of obeying one察of heeding his words
while looking into his eyes察or of trusting in him察院I said to Black。 ^Thus察if they
behave disrespectfully察 wildly察 immaturely or childishly toward you察 I know
that you¨ll show them tolerance at first察 understanding that they¨ve been
raised without ever once obeying their father察 whom they do not even
remember。 ̄
^I remember my father察院said Shevket。
^Hush´and listen察院I said。 ^From now on Black¨s word carries more weight
than even my own。 ̄ I faced Black。 ^If they refuse to listen to you察if they are
disobedient or show even the slightest sign of being rude察 spoiled or ill´
mannered察first warn them察but forgive them察院I said察forgoing the mention of
beatings that was on the tip of my tongue。 ^Whatever space I occupy in your
heart察they shall share that space察too。 ̄
^I didn¨t marry you solely to be your husband察院said Black察 but also to be
father to these dear boys。 ̄
^Did you two hear that拭院
^Oh my Lord察I pray you never neglect to shine your light down upon us察院
Hayriye interjected from a corner。 ^My dear God察 I pray you protect us察 my
Lord。 ̄
225
^You two did hear察 didn¨t you拭院 I said。 ^Good for you察 my pretty young
men。 Since your father loves you like this察 should you suddenly lose control
and disregard his words察he will have forgiven you for it beforehand。 ̄
^And I¨ll forgive them afterward察as well察院said Black。
^However察 if you two defy his warning a third time´then察 you¨ll have
earned the right to a beating察院I said。 ^Are we understood拭Your new father察
Black察has e here from the vilest察the worst of battles察from wars that were
the very wrath of God and from which your late father did not return察 yes察
he¨s a hardened man。 Your grandfather has spoiled you and indulged you。 Your
grandfather is now very ill。 ̄
^I want to go and be with him察院Shevket said。
^If you¨re not going to listen察Black will teach you what it means to get a
beating from Hell。 Your grandfather won¨t be able to save you from Black the
way he used to protect you from me。 If you don¨t want to suffer your father¨s
wrath察 you¨re not to fight anymore察 you¨re to share everything察 tell no lies察
perform your prayers察 not go to bed before memorizing your lessons and
you¨re not to speak roughly to Hayriye or tease her´Are we understood拭院
In one movement察 Black crouched down and took Orhan up in his arms。
Shevket kept his distance。 I had the fleeting urge to embrace him and weep。
My poor forlorn and fatherless son察my poor solitary Shevket察you¨re so alone
in this immense world。 I thought of myself as a small child察 like Shevket察 a
child all alone in the world察and remembered how once I¨d been held in my
dear father¨s arms the way Orhan was now being held by Black。 But unlike
Orhan察I wasn¨t awkward in my father¨s embrace察like a fruit unaccustomed to
its tree。 I was delighted察I recalled how my father and I would often embrace察
sniffing each other¨s skin。 I was on the verge of tears察 but restrained myself。
Though I hadn¨t planned to say anything of the sort察I said此
^e now察let¨s hear you call Black ̄Father。^ ̄
The night was so cold and our courtyard was so very silent。 In the distance
dogs were barking and howling pitifully and sorrowfully。 A few more minutes
passed。 The silence bloomed and spread secretly like a black flower。
^All right察children察院I said much later。 ^Let¨s go inside so we all don¨t catch
cold out here。 ̄
It wasn¨t only Black and I who felt the timidity of a bride and groom left
alone after the wedding察but Hayriye and the children察all of us察entered our
home hesitantly as though it were the darkened house of a stranger。 We were
226
met with the smell of my father¨s corpse察but nobody seemed to be aware of
it。 We silently climbed the stairs察and the shadows cast onto the ceiling by our
oil lamps察 as always察 spun and merged察 now expanding察 now shrinking察 yet
seemed somehow to be doing so for the first time。 Upstairs察 as we were
removing our shoes in the hall察Shevket said此
^Before I go to sleep can I kiss my grandfather¨s hand拭院
^I checked in on him just now察院Hayriye said。 ^Your grandfather is in such
pain and disfort it¨s clear that evil spirits have taken hold of him。 The fever
of the illness has consumed him。 Go to your room so I can prepare your bed。 ̄
Hayriye herded them into the room。 As she laid out the mattress and
spread out the sheets and quilts察she was going on as if every object she held
was a marvel unique to the world察and muttering about how sleeping here in a
warm room between clean sheets and under warm down quilts would be like
spending the night in a sultan¨s palace。
^Hayriye察tell us a story察院said Orhan as he sat on his chamber pot。
^Once upon a time there was a blue man察院 said Hayriye察 and his closest
panion was a jinn。 ̄
^Why was the man blue拭院said Orhan。
^For goodness sake察 Hayriye察院 I said。 ^Tonight at least don¨t tell a story
about jinns and ghosts。 ̄
^Why shouldn¨t she拭院 said Shevket。 ^Mother察 after we fall asleep do you
leave the bed and go to be with Grandfather拭院
^Your grandfather察Allah protect him察is gravely ill察院I said。 ^Of course I go to
his bedside at night to look after him。 Then察I return to our bed察don¨t I拭院
^Have Hayriye look after Grandfather察院said Shevket。 ^Doesn¨t Hayriye look
after my grandfather at night anyway拭院
^Are you finished拭院Hayriye asked of Orhan。 As she wiped Orhan¨s behind
with a wet rag察his face was overe with a sweet lethargy。 She glanced into
the pot and wrinkled up her face察not due to the smell察but as if what she saw
wasn¨t sufficient。
^Hayriye察院I said。 ^Empty the chamber pot and bring it back。 I don¨t want
Shevket to leave the room in the middle of the night。 ̄
^Why shouldn¨t I leave the room拭院asked Shevket。 ^Why shouldn¨t Hayriye
tell us a story about jinns and fairies拭院
227
^Because there are jinns in the house察you idiot察院Orhan said察not so much
out of fear察 but with the dumb optimism I always noticed in his expression
after he¨d relieved himself。
^Mother察are there jinns here拭院
^If you leave the room察if you attempt to see your grandfather察the jinn will
catch you。 ̄
^Where will Black lay out his bed拭院 said Shevket。 ^Where will he sleep
tonight拭院
^I¨m not sure察院I said。 ^Hayriye will be preparing his bed。 ̄
^Mother察you¨re still going to sleep with us察aren¨t you拭院said Shevket。
^How many times do I have to tell you拭I¨ll sleep together with you two as
before。 ̄
^Always拭院
Hayriye left carrying the chamber pot。 From the cabi where I¨d hidden
them察 I removed the remaining nine illustrations left behind by the
unspeakable murderer and sat on the bed。 By the light of a candle察I stared at
them for a long time trying to fathom their secret。 These illustrations were
beautiful enough that you might mistake them for your own forgotten
memories察and as with writing察as you looked at them察they spoke。
I¨d lost myself in the pictures。 I understood from the scent of Orhan¨s
beautiful head察 upon which I¨d rested my nose察 that he察 too察 was looking at
that odd and suspicious Red。 As occasionally happened察I had the urge to take
out my breast and nurse him。 Later察 when Orhan was frightened by the
terrifying picture of Death察gently and sweetly breathing through his reddish
lips察I suddenly wanted to eat him。
^I¨ll eat you up察do you understand me拭院
^Mama察tickle me察院he said and threw himself down。
^Get off there察 get up you beast察院 I screamed and slapped him。 He¨d lain
across the pictures。 I checked the illustrations察apparently no harm had e
to them。 The image of the horse in the topmost picture was faintly察 yet
unnoticeably察crumpled。
Hayriye entered with the empty chamber pot。 I gathered the pictures and
was about to leave the room when Shevket began to cry此
^Mother拭Where are you going拭院
228
^I¨ll be right back。 ̄
I crossed the freezing hallway。 Black was seated across from my father¨s
empty cushion察 in the same position that he¨d spent four days discussing
painting and perspective with him。 I laid out the illustrations on the folding
bookstand察the cushion and on the floor before him。 Color abruptly suffused
the candlelit room with a warmth and an astonishing liveliness察 as if
everything had been set in motion。
Utterly still察 we looked at the pictures at length察 silently and respectfully。
When we made even the slightest movement察the still air察which bore the scent
of death from the room across the wide hall察 would make the candle flame
flicker and my father¨s mysterious illustrations seemed to move too。 Had the
paintings taken on such significance for me because they were the cause of my
father¨s death拭 Was I mesmerized by the peculiarity of the horse or the
uniqueness of Red察 by the misery of the tree or the sadness of the two
wandering dervishes察or was it because I feared the murderer who¨d killed my
father and perhaps others on account of these illustrations拭 After a while察
Black and I fully understood that the silence between us察 as much as it
might¨ve been caused by the paintings察was also due to our being alone in the
same room on our wedding night。 Both of us wanted to speak。
^When we wake tomorrow morning察 we should tell everybody that my
hapless father has passed away in his sleep察院I said。 Although what I¨d said was
correct察it appeared as if I were being insincere。
^Everything will be fine in the morning察院 said Black in the same peculiar
manner察unable to believe in the truth of what he¨d spoken。
When he made a nearly imperceptible gesture to draw closer to me察I had
the urge to embrace him and察as I did with the children察to take his head into
my hands。
Just at that moment察 I heard the door to my father¨s room open and察
springing up in terror察I ran over察opened our door and looked out此By the light
that filtered into the hallway察I was shocked to see my father¨s door half open。
I stepped into the icy hallway。 My father¨s room察heated by the still´lit brazier察
reeked of decay。 Had Shevket or somebody else e here拭His body察dressed
in his nightgown察 rested peacefully察 bathed in the faint light of the brazier。 I
thought about the way察 on some nights察 I¨d say察 Have a good night察 dear
Father察院while he read the Book of the Soul by candlelight before going to sleep。
Raising himself slightly察he¨d take the glass I¨d brought him out of my hand
and say察 May the water bearer never want for anything察院before kissing me on
229
the cheek and looking into my eyes as he used to do when I was a girl。 I stared
down at my father¨s horrid face and察in short察I was afraid。 I wanted to avoid
looking at him察while at the same time察goaded by the Devil察I wanted to see
how gruesome he¨d bee。
I timidly returned to the room with the blue door whereupon Black made
an advance on me。 I pushed him away察more unthinkingly than out of anger。
We struggled in the flickering light of the candle察 though it wasn¨t really a
struggle but rather the imitation of a struggle。 We were enjoying bumping
into each other察touching one another¨s arms察legs and chests。 The confusion I
felt resembled the emotional state that Nizami had described with regard to
H┨srev and Shirin此Could Black察who¨d read Nizami so thoroughly察sense that察
like Shirin察 I also meant ^Continue ̄ when I said察 Don¨t bruise my lips b
